Some Orlando Fire Department History...

ORLANDO, "The City Beautiful," is one of the world's premier tourist destinations. Universal Studios Florida™, Walt Disney World™, Sea World™, and several other theme parks and attractions are located in and around Orlando. The city is home to several sports teams including the ACHL Seals, the Arena Football Predators,  and the NBA Magic. The full-time population of Orlando is approximately 200,000, however, the daytime population swells to nearly 700,000. Orlando is in the subtropics, so residents and visitors can usually expect hot summers and mild winters.

Our Department covers over 95 square miles including several major theme parks, a municipal airport, and hundreds of bodies of water. The Orlando Fire Department works a 24 on/ 48 off duty rotation The Department has several specialized teams consisting of Haz-mat, High Angle, Bike EMS, Technical Rescue and Dive Rescue units. The Orlando Fire Department has always been known for their aggressive interior fire attack, and is continually striving towards improvement in our firefighting techniques. Mutual Aid and Joint Response agreements have been made with the local county and city governments. Advanced Life Support care is provided to the residents and visitors to the city and surrounding areas. Patient transportation by the Department is currently being sought for the for the benefit of our citizens and guests. Immunization teams have been established to aid our communities. CERT classes are taught throughout the year to our residents in order to ready them for disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes.

In 1961 Orlando Firefighters organized Local 1365 of the International Association of  Firefighters. However, it was not until 1973 that city management negotiated with Local 1365. A new state law giving firefighters the right to bargain with city officials had been adopted. The 1973 negotiations marked the first time the city had bargained with any labor union. Our present day E-Board continually monitors and stays abreast of our department's status by being heavily involved with all the various committees on the department, watching out for our members' rights and staying involved in local politics.
